MP Residency Program
Provision/Erlanger Medical Physics Residency
Provision Healthcare has partnered with Erlanger Health in Chattanooga, TN, to provide a uniquely comprehensive Residency Program in Medical Physics. The Medical Physics residency program will offer training across 2 Varian linacs, 1 Eleckta linac, 1 Cyberknife, 1 Varian Acuity simulation room, as well as HDR, LDR and proton therapy (images of several of these treatment machines are shown below). This combination of radiation modalities and treatment cases will provide Medical Physics residents in the program with comprehensive training in radiation therapy. The training staff is committed to preparing Medical Physics Residents for certification through the ABR exam. The training staff includes seven DABR certified medical physicists, along with support from physicians, dosimetrists, therapists, administration and other clinical staff.

Provision Radiation Therapy provides electron and photon therapy treatments using an Elekta Linear Accelerator – 6, 10 and 15 MV X-rays and 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 20 MeV Electrons. The PRT clinic is also equipped with a Siemens large bore CT scanner used for PRT treatment simulations. PCPT offers a state of the art proton therapy facility equipped with pencil beam scanning IMRT. The PCPT clinic is also equipped with a Siemens large bore CT scanner used for PCPT (Proton) treatment simulations. With the further growth of our campus, comes the need for additional trained medical physicists. It has been our goal to establish a Medical Physics residency for some time, with the hopes of further educating and graduating outstanding medical physicists for future employment in the field of medical physics.
Radiation oncology at Erlanger has existed for over 30 years as Chattanooga’s first radiation therapy center, and continues to provide state of the art care to its patients through a wide range of modalities. Two physicists and two dosimetrists provide physics planning and support for a patient load ranging between 40 and 60 daily treatments. As the region’s only teaching hospital, Erlanger serves a large indigent population, and treats many of the area’s more complicated cases. In conjunction with T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital, the Radiation Oncology Department is the only cancer center in the region offering pediatric therapy. SRS and SBRT are provided through the CyberKnife program, which is a major contributor to the international RSSearch Patient Registry. Brachytherapy has been offered since the department’s inception, and includes GYN LDR, HDR, and eye plaque treatments.
